Description: Greater plantain is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Plantaginaceae family, which develops from seeds. It has a bare, leafless flowering stem and a short rhizome. The stem is up to 15 cm. high, colored in shades of green. The leaves are large, wide, oval, with pronounced leaf veins and develop in the form of a rosette at the base of the plant. The flowers are located at the top of the stem in a dense green-brown inflorescence with purple stamens. It is pollinated naturally by the wind. It grows in the lowlands throughout Bulgaria.

Chemical composition/Contents and properties: The young leaves of the plant are rich in vitamin B1 and riboflavin, ascorbic acid, benzoic acid, chlorogenic acid, citric acid, ferulic acid, salicylic acid. They also contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, allantoin, ursolic acid, as well as mucilaginous and bitter substances; tannins, carotene, polysaccharides, salts, vitamin K, vitamin C, etc.

Medicinal action and application: Greater plantain has an antibacterial, hemostatic, expectorant, antimicrobial, antiulcer, diuretic, laxative effect, improves digestion. In medicine, it is used for diseases of the respiratory tract, the digestive system and the liver, for itchy dermatoses, trophic ulcers and eczema, for diabetes, periodontitis, edema, etc. For medicinal purposes, both the leaves, the entire aerial part, and the fresh juice and seeds of the plant are used. Plantain seeds contain up to 30% glue, which swells in the intestines and acts as a laxative and sedative.
