Roots

Bloody Cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum L.)

Bloody cranesbill is a perennial herbaceous plant from the geranium family (Geraniaceae). The species is botanically accepted as Geranium sanguineum L. and is native from Europe to Western Siberia and the Caucasus, including Bulgaria.

The plant develops a strong rhizome and prostrate to ascending, branched and hairy stems. The leaves are rounded to kidney-shaped in outline and deeply divided, often turning reddish in autumn. The flowers are solitary, purple-red to reddish-violet, with five petals. The roots and rhizomes are valuable tannin-rich raw materials for herbal powders, extracts, products with astringent action and external formulations.
