Burdock is a biennial herbaceous plant from the daisy family (Asteraceae). The species is botanically accepted as Arctium lappa L. and is native to temperate Eurasia, including Bulgaria.
The plant develops an upright, robust and branched stem, large heart-shaped leaves and flower heads with hooked involucral bracts. These hooks allow the mature fruits to attach to animal fur and clothing. The root is elongated, fleshy and spindle-shaped, and is the main raw material used for herbal teas, extracts, powders, cosmetic products and functional foods.
