Calendula is an annual or short-lived herbaceous plant from the daisy family (Asteraceae). The species is botanically accepted as Calendula officinalis L. and is native to the Western Mediterranean, while it is widely cultivated in Bulgaria.
The plant develops a branched stem, elongated slightly fleshy leaves and bright yellow to orange flower heads. Calendula has a long flowering period, allowing repeated flower harvesting. The flowers and petals are valuable raw materials for cosmetic products, herbal blends, extracts, ointments, floral water and natural skin-care formulations.
