Corn silk consists of the long thread-like stigmas of the female flowers of maize. Maize is an annual crop from the grass family (Poaceae, traditionally Gramineae) and is botanically known as Zea mays L. In European herbal practice, the raw material is known as Maydis stigma / Stigmata Maydis.
The plant develops an upright stem, broad leaves and separate male and female inflorescences. The female flowers form the ear, from which the characteristic long stigmas emerge. These stigmas are collected as the herbal raw material. Corn silk is valued for herbal teas, botanical extracts, urinary formulations, functional herbal products and powders. EMA covers Zea mays L., stigma as a herbal substance associated with minor urinary tract complaints.
