Raw Material Characteristics
The herbal raw material consists of the green sterile summer stems together with their branches. The aerial parts are collected by cutting the stems no more than 20 cm from the top.
Field horsetail has a dark brown to black, strongly branched rhizome, from which two types of stems emerge each year: brown fertile stems in spring and green sterile stems in summer. For medicinal purposes, only the sterile summer stems are used. The plant material is firm, rough, and fibrous and is suitable for further processing, including cutting, crushing, milling, and extraction.
