Male Fern (Dryopteris filix-mas (L.) Schott) - Dried rhizome

Male fern is a large perennial spore-producing plant. The full correct botanical name is Dryopteris filix-mas (L.) Schott; the species is accepted by Plants of the World Online and World Flora Online. In modern taxonomy it belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae, although older sources may place it in Polypodiaceae.

The plant develops a creeping to ascending rhizome densely covered with brown scales. The fronds form tufts and are usually 30–120 cm long, with scaly stalks and a pinnately divided blade. Sori develop on the lower side of mature fronds and produce spores. The rhizome is a potent specialized raw material for pharmaceutical, veterinary and laboratory development.
