Peppermint is a perennial aromatic herb from the mint family (Lamiaceae). The species is botanically accepted as Mentha × piperita L. and is a hybrid of Mentha aquatica and Mentha spicata.
The plant develops shallow rhizomes, square branched stems and dark green elliptical leaves with a fresh menthol aroma. The flowers are pale pink to violet and arranged in dense terminal inflorescences. Peppermint leaves, herb, essential oil and floral water are valued raw materials for teas, extracts, food products, cosmetics and oral-care applications.
