Spiny restharrow is a perennial spiny herbaceous plant to subshrub from the legume family (Fabaceae, traditionally Leguminosae). The species is botanically accepted as Ononis spinosa L. and is native to Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia, including Bulgaria.
The plant develops a long woody root and branched stems that often become woody at the base. The branches end in spines, while the leaves are mostly trifoliate, with serrated leaflets. The flowers are pink to violet-pink and occur singly or in loose inflorescences in the leaf axils. The root is the main raw material for herbal teas, extracts, diuretic botanical formulations and herbal powders.
