Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

Sunflower is an annual herbaceous plant from the daisy family (Asteraceae, traditionally Compositae). The species is botanically accepted as Helianthus annuus L. and is one of the widely cultivated oilseed crops.

The plant develops an upright, rough stem and a deep root system. Its leaves are large, rough and mostly alternate. The flower head is composed of peripheral ray florets and inner disc florets. The fruit is a seed enclosed in a firm hull. Sunflower flowers mainly in summer and is valued as a food, feed and plant-based raw material.
