Dog rose is a thorny deciduous shrub from the rose family (Rosaceae). The correct botanical name is Rosa canina L.; the species is native from Madeira, Northwest Africa and Europe to Central Asia and Pakistan.
The plant develops long branched stems with prickles, pinnate leaves and white to pale pink flowers. The fruits, known as rosehips, are red-orange, fleshy, with a tart-sweet and mildly astringent taste. They are a valuable raw material for teas, extracts, powders, functional foods, syrups, jams and cosmetic botanical products.
