Dwarf Elder (Sambucus ebulus L.)

Dwarf elder, also known as danewort, is a perennial herbaceous plant from the genus Sambucus. The species is botanically accepted as Sambucus ebulus L. and is native from Europe to southern Turkmenistan, including Bulgaria.

The plant develops a strong underground system, upright annual stems with white pith, and opposite pinnate leaves. The flowers are white to pale pink and arranged in broad, flat clusters. The berries are small, spherical and black when mature, with dark-coloured juice and a characteristic heavy aroma. They are a specialised fruit raw material for controlled botanical extracts, powders and professional plant-based formulations.
