Rowanberry / Mountain Ash Fruit (Sorbus aucuparia L.)

Rowan, also known as European mountain ash, is a deciduous tree or tall shrub from the rose family (Rosaceae). The species is botanically accepted as Sorbus aucuparia L. and is native from Europe to Iran, the Russian Far East, North China and Korea, including Bulgaria.

The plant develops smooth grey-green bark, pinnate leaves with serrated leaflets and small white to greenish flowers arranged in many-flowered clusters. The fruits are small, spherical, bright red to orange-red, with an astringent taste and mealy flesh. They ripen in September – October and are a valuable fruit raw material for herbal teas, extracts, functional products, fruit-based formulations, powders and cosmetic botanical extracts.
